Richard "Rick" Atkinson

Rick Atkinson, 61, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with Elder Charles Brown officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Born June 18, 1954, in Burlington, IA, Richard Dean was the son of Edward and Inez AskewAtkinson. He was a 1973 graduate of Danville High School. On August 18, 1978, he married Debbie Ryan in Burlington, IA. The couple later divorced. For the past 18 years, he enjoyed the special companionship of Karen Hunter. For over 36 years, Rick worked at Heatilator, now known as Hearth and Home Technologies in Mt. Pleasant. He served the company in many capacities. His most recent position was in the research and design department. Rick enjoyed hunting, fishing and just being on the water. He was an intense Green Bay Packer fan and was always up for another trip to Lambeau Field to see his favorite team play, even though he had attended 141 games. Rick enjoyed barbequing, watching sprint car races, and dancing. He loved to fly remote control model airplanes that he had built. A special place for Rick was their cabin at the Ketchum Bridge, where he would enjoy the sunset and a dance with Karen. Survivors include his mother, Inez of Danville, IA; two sons, Ryan Atkinson of Libertyville, IA and Jason Atkinson of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a special companion, Karen Hunter of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Butch Atkinson of Burlington, IA; and two sisters, Connie (Dale) Glasgow and Barbara Crear all of Danville, IA. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Keagan Atkinson and Zoey Atkinson both of Winfield, IA.
