SIGOURNEY-Robert G. Marget, age 76, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney from complications of Alzheimer's. Rob was born December 26, 1928, in Carroll, Iowa, to George and Loretta (Wiedemeier) Marget. He spent his formative years working for his dad at the Carroll Creamery and enjoying sports, especially football and basketball. Rob was honored by the Des Moines Register as a first-team All-State tackle in the fall of 1946 and teamed with younger brother George on Carroll's state tournament basketball team later that same school year. Rob attended the University of Notre Dame and received a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1951. His leisure time at Notre Dame earned him a championship in duplicate bridge. Rob served in the Korean Conflict and after returning home began his career in banking as an examiner for the FDIC. In 1955 he moved to Sigourney where he and his brothers Jack and George purchased the Keokuk County State Bank. Rob continued as an officer of the bank until his retirement in 1999. On June 30, 1956, Rob married Sally Larson of Roland. Rob and Sally made their home in Sigourney, raising four children: Robin, Kathleen, Jeff and Molly. Rob was an active member of the Sigourney community, participating in Kiwanis, Sigourney Area Development Corporation, Sigourney Main Street, Chamber of Commerce and Sigourney Ball, Inc. He was a past president of the St. Mary Catholic Church Parish Council and a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rob was also a member of the Iowa Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers Association of America. He loved his family and his community, enjoyed reading and gardening and was an avid Notre Dame and Hawkeye fan. Survivors include his wife: Sally Marget of Sigourney; four children: Robin House and husband David of Marion, Kathleen O'Rourke and husband Dan of Sigourney, Jeff Marget of Chandler, Arizona and Molly Dahlstrom and husband Sage of Coralville; 10 grandchildren; brother: Jack Marget and wife Mary Agnes of Sun City West, Arizona and sister-in-law: Helen Marget of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Sigourney with military honors by Lacey Kerr V.F.W. Post #2308 and Am. Legion Post #19. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a rosary at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sigourney Public Library, Keokuk County Historical Society or St. Mary Catholic Church. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
