Marengo – Robert Sterling Smith, 79, of Marengo, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2026, at English Valley Care Center. Rob was born on October 14, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Robert Gordon and Florence (Mosdell) Smith. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School with the Class of 1965 and continued his education at William Penn College. On May 10, 1969, he married the love of his life, Joyce Heitman, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne, Iowa. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and the century farm he loved. A lifelong resident of the century farm where he was born and raised, Rob was deeply rooted in the community he called home. He took great pride in caring for the land and the legacy it represented, and there was nowhere else he would rather have lived. Rob worked as a machinist for Link Belt and FMC in Cedar Rapids for 16 years before owning and operating Rob's Auto Supply and managing CarQuest. He later joined Kinze Manufacturing as the manager of the Kinze Repower Division, where he remained until his retirement.
Rob's greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren. Some of his happiest memories were made giving tractor rides around the family farm, creating traditions and moments they will cherish forever. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved cats.
Always ready for an adventure, Rob never turned down the opportunity for an impromptu road trip. He enjoyed camping, boating, winning at cards, browsing flea markets, working on cars, and collecting John Deere tractors and memorabilia. Whether he was purchasing or restoring a vintage car, searching for a unique treasure, or adding to his John Deere collection, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
What truly set Rob apart was his remarkable kindness and generosity. He was the kind of person who would stop whatever he was doing to help someone in need. He never expected anything in return and found genuine happiness in giving to others. Friends and family often said he was one of the kindest, most generous people they had ever known. If Rob had only one dollar, he would gladly have given it to someone who needed it more. He faced life with grace, optimism, a gentle spirit, and a smile that made others feel at ease.
Even in his final days, Rob's kindness never wavered. His caregivers often remarked that he was one of the sweetest patients they had ever cared for. He treated everyone with gratitude, respect, and warmth, reflecting the character that defined his entire life.
Rob was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church for 68 years and was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 57 years, Joyce; his children, Jeffrey (Ciara) Smith of Walford, Iowa, and Megan (Shane) Russell of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and his cherished grandchildren, Caleigh, Taylor, and Jaden Smith; Reese, Elle, and Louisa Martin; and Catherine, Caroline, Patrick, and Finn Russell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert G. and Florence Smith.
Rob's legacy is one of unwavering love for his family, quiet generosity, enduring faith, and a life lived with humility and compassion. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew him.
