Scott Lee Hinz was born June 24, 1955 in Denison, IA the oldest son of Gordon and Alice "Marie" (Hawley) Hinz. He graduated from Mediapolis (IA) High School and Iowa State University with a degree in horticulture. He married his high school sweetheart, Mallory Moore, and they had one daughter, Caitlin.
He began his professional career at Kansas Nebraska Energy in Casper, WY, and then worked for 25 years at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory.
Scott nurtured a love of the natural world throughout his life. He planted and cared for innumerable trees, gardens and houseplants. He loved outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, annual turkey and deer hunting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and golfing. He and Mal enjoyed traveling in their retirement, particularly regular trips to New York City. In his spare time he enjoyed following the Hawks and Cubs, reading, and practicing meditation.
Scott's most endearing quality was his kind-hearted and fun-loving nature. His laughter was infectious and more than once attending a high school reunion someone would hear his laugh and say "Scotty's here!".
Scott passed away February 1, 2020 after a five-year battle with leukemia.
Scott continues to live in the hearts of his wife of 41 years, Mallory, daughter, Caitlin, Denver, CO; father, Gordon, Iowa City, IA; brothers Mark (Larissa), Harlan, IA; and Brent (Tamara), Columbus, OH. Nieces; Allyson, Kylee and Madelyn and nephew; Jakob. He was preceded in death by his mother, maternal and paternal grandparents.
The family would like to extend their love and gratitude to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics bone marrow transplant unit and Dr. Margarida Silverman and Gina Glass, PA-C.
