Shirley Ann Bohr was born on a farm north of Keota, June 27, 1934 daughter of Guy and Ruth Rittenhouse Lyle. She attended grade school at Lafayette Country School, and graduating from Keota High School in 1952. After high school, Shirley was employed by Security State Bank in Keota for six years before becoming assistant cashier at Maquoketa State Bank.
On June 22, 1959 Shirley was united in marriage to Howard Dean Bohr at St. Mary’s Church, Keota, IA. Upon marriage, she began a career of housewife and mother on the farm southwest of Wellman.
She was an election worker and cashier for Duwa Auction for many years. She was active in St Joseph’s Catholic Church where she held numerous offices in Altar and Rosary, chairman of church dinners, taught religious education and was an Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed doing volunteer work, was a 4-H leader for many years, and played the accordion for entertainment. She was honored by being in the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame and was “Iowan of the Day” at the Iowa State Fair in 2005. She enjoyed cooking, eating out, running local road races, playing cards and watching her grandchildren participate in activities. Shirley passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 91 years. Shirley will be remembered for her love of fun and laughter, holiday celebrations, and love of ice cream.
Shirley is survived by five children: Deanna (Todd) Meyer of Wayland, Denise (Tom) Austin of Wilton, Deb (Jerry) Vittetoe of Washington, Sue (Todd) Nelson of Lisbon, and Steve (Jennifer) Bohr of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; Jill Meyer, Jenny (Mike) Giudici, Joel (Morgan) Meyer, Drake (Sarah) Austin, Cale (Tasha) Austin, Grace (Drew) Hoff, Jeremy (Katee) Vittetoe, Jordan (Rebecca) Vittetoe, Holly (Alex) Schmitz, McKenna and Kali Nelson, Brody, Baxter and Ayva Bohr, and 19 great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister-in-law Shirley Jean Bohr and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Ruth Lyle, husband Howard, brothers and sister-in-laws Richard (Phyllis) Lyle, Francis (Theola) Lyle, James (Erma) Lyle, Charles (Dorothy) Lyle and Robert Roger in infancy and sister Reta (Loren) Gullett. Also, in-laws Marvin and Christina Bohr, brother-in-law Harold Bohr and two great-grandchildren, Lucas Vittetoe and Hazel Austin.
A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am Monday, February 16, 2026 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 5:30 pm with a rosary at 2:00 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home, Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph’s and Washington County 4-H. Messages and tributes may be sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
