Marengo - Shirley Ann Slaymaker was born December 16, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Keith and Anna (VanWaus) Feckley. She graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1967. Shirley was united in marriage to Don Slaymaker on September 20, 1969 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. She worked for Iowa County Savings Bank for 11 years, Huedepohl Implement for many years, Double Circle Co-op in Amana for 4 years and then McDonald’s Corp. In Iowa City for 20 years. Shirley was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, served as Treasurer for the Altar and Rosary for 15 years and was a member of the St. Patrick’s Quilting Club. She enjoyed reading, crochet, knitting and sewing, especially with her grandchildren. She had made pillow cases for Rose Haven Nursing Home and sewed items for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Shirley died Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Compass Memorial Hospital in Marengo, at the age of 77 years.
She is survived by her husband, Don; two sons, Matt (LeeAnn) Slaymaker of North Liberty and Dan (Leanne) Slaymaker of Marengo; five grandchildren, Luke Slaymaker (Taylor), Mason Slaymaker, Jackson, Jasmine, and Joselin Slaymaker; her brother David (Suzanne) Feckley of Wylie, TX; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dennis Feckley and sister Sheila Huedepohl.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2026 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo with Fr. Mensah officiating. Burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, May 1, 2026 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Marengo with a Rosary service beginning at 3:30 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.
