Wellman- Sterling Wayne Schweitzer was born on May 12, 1935 in Wood River, Nebraska, the son of Steven and Malinda (Stutzman) Schweitzer. He moved from Nebraska to the Wellman area when he was 12 years old. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1953. On December 29, 1955, Sterling was united in marriage to Dorothea Swartzendruber at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Sterling served with 1-W voluntary service in Denver, Colorado from 1955 to 1957. He was an active member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. He held multiple offices, and especially enjoyed being leader of the Torchbearers boys' club for many years. Sterling farmed his whole life. He was a member of the Cattlemen's Association. He enjoyed raising cattle, hunting, going to the sale barn, cutting wood, operating his bulldozer, going to coffee with friends, and spreading cheer with his sense of humor. He loved to travel, taking his family on many vacations across the United States.
Sterling passed away Saturday, October 25, 2025 at his home in Wellman at the age of 90 years. Sterling is survived by his wife Dorothea (Dot), five children: Michael (Melanie) Schweitzer, Keith (Barb) Schweitzer, Barbara (Brent) Hochstetler, Melinda (Timothy) Hathaway and Amy (Nathan) Graf all of Wellman. Seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, two sisters Elaine Hochstetler and Judy (Wayne) Beachy, two brothers Willard Schweitzer and Mahlon (Kaye) Schweitzer. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Larry Schweitzer, a brother in infancy, brother-in-law Stanley Hochstetler, two sisters-in-law Judi Schweitzer and Donna Schweitzer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 28, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made out to Hospice of Washington County or Washington County Ambulance Service.
