KALONA-Sylvia (Schrock) Ropp was born August 28, 1932 in Bremen, IN to Levi & Sarah (Yoder) Schrock. Her family moved to Kalona, IA when she was 12 years old. She accepted Jesus as her Saviour & was baptized in her youth. Sylvia married Elmer J. Ropp on October 18, 1953. She was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening & sewing, & she loved being with her family. She cooked for the Kalona Historical Society for many years as well as private groups. Through that she formed many lasting friendships. Her life was one of giving and serving. Sylvia Ropp, age 93, of Kalona passed away April 17, 2026 at home surrounded by family.
Survivors include 9 children, Lamar (Lois Hostetler) of Kalona, Richard (Regina Troyer) of Sugarcreek, OH.; Gerald (Bonnie Nauman) of Kalona, Lyndon (Shirley Miller) of Hutchinson, KS, Loren of Nashville, TN., Sheila (Gabriel Beachy) of Kalona, Nyle of Sugarcreek, OH., Sara June (Tim Stoltzfus) of Sierra Vista, AZ., Shana (Eldon Helmuth) of Kalona, IA., 38 Grandchildren and 72 Great Grandchildren, 1 brother, Leo Schrock of Kalona, 1 Sister-in-law, Fannie Schrock, 1 Brother-in-law, Daniel Nisly. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer J. Ropp on May 27, 1992, a stillborn son, a Grandson, Judson Stoltzfus, and a Great Grandson, Caleb Ropp, 3 Sisters: Mary Miller, Judy Miller, and Alma Nisly, 4 Brothers: Perry, Olen, Elmer, & Edwin Schrock.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Elwyn Stutzman, Lavonne Bontrager and Delmar Yoder will officiate. Burial will be at Sharon Bethel Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Fairview Mennonite Church.
A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice. Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is caring for Sylvia and her family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
