SIGOURNEY-Thomas Jefferson Hardesty, age 67, of Sigourney, died Friday, October 29, 2004, at his home. Tom was born February 22, 1937, in Sigourney to Samuel and Mabel (Liechti) Hardesty. He grew up in Sigourney and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1955. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1964 he lived in New York City, Washington D.C. and Augusta, West Virginia before moving back to Sigourney in 1986. He was a journalist for the Oskaloosa Herald, retiring in 1999. He brought joy and entertainment to many with his piano recitals at nursing homes and hospitals in Keokuk and Mahaska counties. Survivors include two sons: Max Hardesty and Jude Hardesty both of Portland, Oregon; two daughters: Ilana Hardesty of Watertown, Massachusetts and Tamara Hardesty of Manchester, Connecticut; two grandchildren: Trent Hardesty and Porshe Hardesty and one brother: Samuel Ray Hardesty of McKinney, Texas, and his good friend Carol Dillon of Sigourney.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Michael William Hardesty and his sister Miriam Anne Holloway. A memorial gathering will be held at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 3, 2004, during which friends and family will be invited to share their stories and reminiscence of Tom Hardesty. There will be no visitation before the memorial. gathering. Donations may be made in Tom's name to the Sigourney Public Library Building Fund, 203 N. Jefferson, Sigourney, IA 52591. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
