Williamsburg-Vergil William Herman Newkirk was born October 8, 1929 in Iowa Township, near Homestead, Iowa, the son of Theo and Emma Zuber Newkirk. He attended St. John Lutheran School and graduated from the Iowa Valley High School in 1947. Vergil was united in marriage to Donna D. Ahlberg on July 21, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church in Homestead. Vergil joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and fought for his country during the Korean War. He was awarded two Bronze Service Stars and was Honorably discharged in 1953. He returned to the farm and with his wife Donna always at his side continued farming until retiring in 1995. He continued his interest in the cattle business, a good restaurant and was passionate about children receiving a solid Christian education. Vergil enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. He never met a stranger anywhere he went. Vergil died Tuesday evening September 28, 2004 at his home after a short illness at the age of 74 years 11 months and 20 days. Vergil is survived by his daughter- Linda Newkirk of Dallas, Texas; a son- Craig and wife Sandy Newkirk of Homestead; three granddaughters- Katrina and husband Craig Brown of Cedar Rapids, Elizabeth Newkirk of Iowa City and Hannah Newkirk of Homestead; a brother- Harlan and wife Dottee Newkirk of Huntley, Illinois; two sisters- Lucille and husband Gene Smith of Cedar Rapids and Jan Sparks of Wheatridge, Colorado; two brother-in-laws - Melvin and wife Kaye Ahlberg of Williamsburg and Gary and wife Jane Ahlberg of Marengo; two aunts - Geneva and husband Gilbert Von Ahsen and Ladean Haack all of Williamsburg and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna in 1995, his parents, his in-laws Carl and Mary Ahlberg and two brother-in-laws Donald Gerdes and Mack Sparks. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Officiating is Pastor Wayne Woolery. Burial in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 1, 2004 from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. There will be a VFW Service Friday at 7:00 P.M..
