Viola King

October 5, 1935 — July 11, 2014

Viola E. King, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014, at the New London Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16th, at the First Baptist Church with H. Wayne Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established for HCI Care Services or New London Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born October 5, 1935, in Moravia, IA, Viola Estella was the daughter of Fredrick W. and Ruth Crawley Hammond. She graduated in 1953 from Moravia High School. On May 16, 1954, she married Edward M. King. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1986. Upon graduation from Moravia High School, she moved to Des Moines, IA where she worked for the Iowa Life Insurance Company. After her marriage, she moved to Mt. Pleasant and worked for the Hall-Weir Lumber Yard, Dr. Robert Lofgren, Wilson Insurance, Henry County Mutual Insurance Company, and Southeast Iowa Production Credit Association. A member of First Baptist Church, she served as Treasurer, Finance Chairman, as a Trustee and on many other committees. She enjoyed her bridge club, and always loved attending her class reunions. As time permitted, she enjoyed fishing and loved to read a good book. She also enjoyed traveling with antique car tours. She was a past president of the Nature Club. Survivors include a nephew, Mike (Dawn) Hammond of Cedar Rapids, IA; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Loree) King of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Richard King of Ankeny, IA; three sisters-in-law, Sue King of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Mary King of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Joan Hammond of Hot Springs, AK; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a brother, Max Hammond.
