CHARITON-Virgil Jacob Linnenkamp, age 94, of Chariton, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton. Virgil was born November 3, 1909, near Harper, Iowa, to Peter and Bertha (Gross) Linnenkamp. He grew up in the Harper area and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper in 1928. On May 21, 1932 he married Alice Jean Bratten in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple lived in Des Moines for 40 years where Virgil worked as a licensed elevator mechanic. They retired to a farm south of Chariton in 1978. Virgil later moved into Chariton. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Des Moines and the Sacred Heart Parish in Chariton. Virgil enjoyed working on anything mechanical and building things, such as houses, airplanes and boats. Survivors include three sons: James S. Linnenkamp and wife Alice of Paso Robles, California, Gerald D. Linnenkamp and wife Marietta of Shawnee, Kansas and Dennis Linnenkamp and wife Marcia of Alto, New Mexico; three daughters: Carol Jeffries and husband Charles of Des Moines, Roberta Linnenkamp of Iowa City and Phyllis Linnenkamp of Iowa City; 23 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Alice in 1992, sister: Lucille Miller and two daughters: Marilyn Jean Linnenkamp and Elizabeth Linnenkamp. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2004, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. William Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton, where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
