Williamsburg-Walter Herman Heitshusen was born January 30, 1924 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Herman F. and Anna Baack Heitshusen. He was baptized March 16, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938. He attended Immanuel Parochial School. Walter served in WWII in the Philippines Island where he was wounded and Honorable discharged receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He was united in marriage to Esther Schreiber April 11, 1948 at Grand Center Lutheran Church near Iowa Falls, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Williamsburg until 1987 when they moved to Williamsburg. Along with farming Walter also engaged in raising Turkeys. Walter was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on various offices through out the years. He served many years on the District Church Extension Board and enjoyed the past years doing volunteer work. Walter died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home of complications of cancer at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 13 days. Walter is survived by his wife Esther of 56 years; five children: Dale (Karol) Heitshusen of Coppell, Texas, Donna (Phill) Hardin of De Soto, Texas, Carol (Ken) Maca of Staplehurst, Nebraska, James (Deb) Heitshusen of South Amana and Gary (Amy) Heitshusen of Sharpsburg, Georgia. 11 grandchildren: Erin Lange, Audra, Brian and Christie Hardin, Andy and Jeremy Maca, Breanne, Amanda and Josh Heitshusen, Eric and Matthew Heitshusen; a great grandchild Madison Lange; a brother: Edgar (Alice) Heitshusen of South Amana; two sisters: Ethel (Richard) Newkirk of Williamsburg and Luella (James) Stone of Des Moines, Iowa and a sister-in-law: Doris Heitshusen of Luzerne. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Erwin, Willard and Herbert. A Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, May 17, 2004 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg with Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 16, 2004 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are for Lutheran Bible Translators, Lutheran Interparish School and Concordia Seminary at St. Louis.
