Wayne L. Craven was born on May 2, 1918 in South English, IA, the son of Jesse P. and Effie Cabler Craven. Wayne grew up in the South English area and graduated from South English High School. He also lived a short time in Sigourney and in Des Moines. He was united in marriage to R. Irene Carter on January 18, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, IA. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Korea and the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Major. He retired in November 1967, in California, after serving 25 years. During his service period he was stationed in California, Hawaii, Okinawa, Korea, Alabama, Italy, Arizona, Vietnam and Maryland. Wayne was a member of the North English V.F.W. & American Legion Posts. Irene preceded him in death in January 2003. Wayne died following an extended illness at his home on Tuesday, April 12, 2005. He lived 86 years, 11 months and 10 days. He is survived by a son Robert (Kathy) of Shingle Springs, CA; a daughter Linda Craven of El Dorado, CA; 2 grandchildren: Patricia Hall (Matt) of Vallejo, CA and Jesse Craven of Shingle Springs, CA. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
